Appointment of Associate Community Directors
Workington AFC are delighted to announce the appointment of two associate directors of the club, Simon Collins and Richard Lewthwaite will take up these newly created roles, with responsibility for the further community development of the club, with immediate effect.
These appointments reflect the importance the Board of Directors place on the relationships with all elements of the game from junior and senior grassroots football, the ladies game and right through to more recent aspects such as walking football etc.
Simon, a Reds fan all his life, has been heavily involved at junior level with Workington Juniors for over 18 years as a Coach, Chairman and trustee.
His brother Chris played for Reds during the 1980’s and 90’s and this has provided him with motivation.
“The route from juniors through into the Development Squad (reserves) is now clear and achievable for more young local players to aspire to play for their home-town team“, said Simon.
“Now with the opportunity of being an Associate Community Director at Workington AFC I can help shape the direction of the Club to continue to influence future generations of junior football mad kids in becoming those fans, and family groups of supporters, that have been missing from Borough Park for far too long”.
Richard, a Reds fan for 40 years, has an extensive knowledge of grass roots football at both junior and senior level having coached and served on the committee and as Chairman of Whitehaven Miners Social FC, and for the past 3 years as Chairman of the West Cumbria Football League.
Richard commented, “Strengthening links with more local Grassroots clubs can only benefit the young people of our area but in reality they are the future of the Reds, whether it be on the pitch or on the terraces. For me it is imperative that the club puts together a long term community plan that is visible for all to see and I am looking forward to being part of the team put in place to deliver that plan”.
Director Dave Bowden commented, “ Richard and Simon have had various discussions with myself and fellow directors Phil Norman and Chris Root and we have all been impressed with both the vision and enthusiasm they have for these roles, which is in line with our goals. In appointing them as associate directors this reflects the importance of the work they will undertake in the future. We welcome them to their new roles and look forward to working alongside them”.
