All roads lead to Brunton Park

For the second time in a week, Reds Ladies will play at a Football League venue when they trot out on to Brunton Park on Friday.

They will contest the Cumberland FA Women’s County Final when they take on favourites, Penrith Ladies, at Carlisle United’s headquarters (7pm).

Last week, they completed their North West Women’s Regional League programme when they played champions, Bury FC Women, at Gigg Lane.

The Ladies had their final training session on Wednesday and will be relaxing as a group on Thursday when they go out for a communal meal.

Manager Brian Heywood is fortunate to have a full squad available to face Penrith, who now play in the division above Reds.

“The players have shown commitment and worked hard all season and getting their hands on some silverware will be a deserved reward for their efforts,” said Heywood who completes his second season in charge.

“It has been a long and, at times, frustrating season with numerous games postponed but the players have shown tremendous grit and character when needed. That has helped them reach the League Plate semi-final, the furthest they have ever been in that competition, and now the final of the County Cup for a second time.”

“We know it will be a tough game but the girls wouldn’t want it any other way, thriving in every difficult situation this season. There is no reason why Friday will be any different,” he concluded.

Reds lifted the Cumberland Cup for the first time three years ago when, as underdogs, they emerged 1-0 winners over Carlisle United at Gillford Park. Hayley Bracken scored the only goal that night and she has bagged nineteen so far in another excellent personal season.

The Cup campaign has evolved in Carlisle with wins over Stanwix and Carlisle United (at Creighton) rewarded with their first appearance at Brunton Park.
