MATCH PREVIEW: Tuesday night football

Reds will renew acquaintances with Blyth Spartans on Tuesday when they make the journey from north west to north east for Northern Premier League action.

It will be our first appearance at Blyth for over seven years with both teams operating at different levels in recent seasons.

Although Reds’ NPL record at Croft Park is moderate to say the least, all Workington supporters will recall the memorable 4-3 play-off win there in 2016.  Apart from that, most Reds successes in the north east came under the Conference North banner when we obtained three victories and a draw from six visits.

Back in 2016-17, Spartans inflicted a league double upon us on their way to the Premier Division title with the six points they obtained at our expense helping them to a final total of 101.

But, at the end of last season, they were relegated back to the NPL and a poor start to the current campaign culminated in a change of manager with Nolberto Solano replaced by David Stockdale.

Spartans are still in the FA Cup but have yet to win, always an ominous sign, in the league so far.  Their three points have been obtained from drawn games against Ashton United, Lancaster City and Guiseley with defeats suffered against Hebburn Town, Worksop Town, Morpeth Town and Prescot Cables.

They will, no doubt, be keen to obtain that elusive first win on Tuesday and maintain their impressive NPL record against Reds.

Injuries could hamper preparations for the game with Jordan Little, Ceiran Casson and Brad Hubbold all doubtful after being substituted during Saturday’s draw.
