Milestone birthday for top Reds’ fan
Borough Park has been Gordon McAllister’s happy place for the past seventy-nine years and he enjoyed another afternoon there on Thursday.
It wasn’t a match day, we know, but Gordon turned up with son Stephen for what he thought was his weekly catch-up, chat and cuppa with the ground staff.
But, instead of discussing last Tuesday’s impressive victory over Bolton Wanderers B, Gordon was the subject of a surprise party. Not just any birthday, though, it was, indeed, a celebration of his 90th!
Gordon might not have been the oldest in the room but he was the most-spritely of the elder brigade and thoroughly enjoyed his birthday treat.
Workington’s number one supporter was greeted by family and friends and spent several hours in the Tony Hopper bar posing for photographs, reminiscing and blowing candles out on a rather special cake.
Life-long Workington supporter, Gordon, began his love affair with the club in 1945 when Reds returned to normality after the Second World War. He supported the club for the last six seasons of the North Eastern League era and has followed them passionately since throughout their twenty-six seasons in the Football League and the ups and many downs of the Northern Premier, North West Counties and National North leagues.
A very talented player himself, Gordon can boast about being signed by Bill Shankly in the fifties when he represented the A team.
At the end of the 2021-22 season, Gordon was voted the Northern Premier League’s Fan of the Year and received an engraved glass memento at the Presentation Evening in Birmingham.
Happy birthday dear Gordon, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU.
