MATCH PREVIEW: Reds welcome young Wanderers

Borough Park will host a Bolton Wanderers team for the first time in thirty-eight years on Tuesday (7.30pm) in the final home friendly.

Wanderers made two visits to West Cumbria in the mid eighties and it will be a pleasure to welcome them to the town once again.

Back in 1985, Reds held Charlie Wright’s Wanderers to a goalless draw with the visitors including Asa Hartford and Sam Allardyce in their line-up.  And it was a special day with club legend, Nat Lofthouse, a popular member of the travelling Bolton contingent.

Then, in 1986, Bolton returned for a second visit with Phil Neal their player manager at the time.  Julian Darby was a member of the Wanderers team that completed a straightforward 3-0 victory that day and he is still involved with the club as their Professional Development Phase Coach.

Those two games were two decades on from a famous FA Cup tie between the clubs when Wanderers inflicted a 4-1 defeat upon the Reds in a 3rd Round tie at Burnden Park in 1965.

Mark Fell will go with a similar squad to the one that obtained a narrow victory at Ashington at the weekend in what will be our eighth game of pre-season.  In contrast, Andy Taylor’s Bolton have just one practice match under their belt, a 3-2 defeat at Runcorn Linnets a week ago.

Nevertheless, it should be an attractive game against a talented squad including some potential household names of the future.
