Century for Scott
He has recorded centuries in cricket and football during a distinguished sporting career and now the 32 year-old east Cumbrian has ticked another box on the football field.
We are well aware that his career total during his ten seasons at Workington reached the 140 mark recently – a tally which includes goals in league and cup competitions – but he netted his 100th league goal last month, becoming just the fourth player in the club’s history to reach that particular milestone.
His 99th goal came in the 3-3 draw home draw v. Prescot Cables but he reached the landmark with a deft finish in the 2-1 success at Trafford. It was a fine goal, like so many in his portfolio, and made sure we secured the points.
Scott’s first league goal for Reds was back in August 2013 and the strike, with his less favoured right foot, was enough to register a 1-0 Skrill North win over Stalybridge Celtic. That was the first of fifty-eight league goals scored at Borough Park with the other forty-two coming at various away grounds up and down the country.
The century has included goals against forty-six different clubs with Altrincham, Ashton United, Rushall Olympic and Trafford probably his favourite opponents having netted five goals against each of them. He has managed to score four goals against Clitheroe, Grantham Town, Ilkeston, Matlock Town, Pickering Town and Ramsbottom United.
His four goals against Matlock came in one memorable match towards the end of the ’15-16 season with three other hat-tricks netted against Altrincham, Clitheroe and Pickering Town.
Billy Charlton, Jack Thom and Jackie Oakes managed to score a century of league goals for Reds during the North Eastern League era but Scott becomes the first centurion in over six decades.
Reds list of centurions appears below with the chart indicating their league tally and overall total:
Billy Charlton 158/194
Jack Thom 123/155
Scott Allison 103/141
Gareth Arnison 98/127
Jackie Oakes 118/125
John Smith 91/110
