Plenty of pre-season action to reflect upon from previous years, looking back at where Reds were playing on the 24th July…….
We said goodbye to club legend, Anthony Wright (pictured), two years ago with the home game against Carlisle United doubling as his testimonial. Both teams formed a ‘guard of honour’ as he took to the field for the final time.
United, skippered by Danny Grainger, finished comfortable 3-1 winners thanks to a Jamie Devitt penalty and strikes from Jerry Yates and Richie Bennett but Kieran Maguire’s consolation goal was probably the best of night.
The large travelling United support boosted the gate to 678.
Willie Donachie and Peter Beardsley were in charge of a Newcastle United U21s side for their visit to Borough Park seven years ago.
This match also resulted in a 3-1 defeat but Magpies fan, Scott Allison, had the satisfaction of scoring our goal with Rolando Aarons, Jonathyn Quinn and Michael Richardson on target for United.
Newcastle played in their famous black and white striped shirts but we wore a ‘one-off’ purple and pink outfit as a fund raiser for the Air Ambulance charity.
Michael Oliver refereed our friendly at Whitley Bay which produced four second half goals in an entertaining 2-2 draw.
Andy Murray-Jones and captain Shaun Vipond scored the Workington goals.
Steven Rudd was in the squad for the match at Holker Street which Barrow won by the odd goal in five.
It was 2-2 at the interval with the aforementioned Anthony Wright converting a penalty for Reds and former Bluebird, Graham Anthony, chipping in with the goal of the match.
But the hosts scored the only goal in the second half with Steve McNulty netting the winner.
Darren Edmondson fielded an experienced side at Netherhall and they kept the County League champions at bay, recording a comfortable 3-0 victory.
Michael Reed, Tony Hopper and Jonny Wright shared the goals.
The A66 derby against Penrith took place at Southend Road but a disappointing Reds performance resulted in a 1-0 defeat.
Blues’ scorer that day was Will Paul – now I wonder what happened to him?
