On this day – 20 July

Flicking through the archives to reflect on Reds pre-season matches played on the 20th July in recent years……….

2019

Our record on Consett’s 3G pitch is not so good – two visits, two defeats.  The second of those was twelve months ago when, despite dominating the opening forty minutes, we finished on the wrong end of a 3-0 score line.

Consett opened the scoring against the run of play with a sublime goal just before half time and, when we faded, added two more after the break.

Injuries and unavailability led to an outing for Scott Williamson who was just sixteen at the time.

2013

We played Whitehaven in the Shaun Hocking Memorial Trophy, using twenty-one players in a 3-1 victory.

David Lynch scored his first goals for the club that day, our first and third of the afternoon.

Depleted Whitehaven had equalised through Matty Tymon.

2010

Reds visited Penrith’s Frenchfield ground for the first time and, after a poor display, lost by the odd goal in five.

On a damp night, torrential rain throughout, Callum Ruttledge put Reds in front via the penalty spot.  The hosts were 2-1 ahead when Matty Tymon equalised for us only for Simon Tucker to head home an eighty-eighth minute winner.

Included in the starting XI was goalkeeper Aaran Taylor and centre forward Aaron Taylor.

2008

Edinburgh side Spartans were our opponents on the second day of the Annan tournament with the first ever meeting between the clubs resulting in a comfortable 3-0 Workington victory.

Graham Anthony opened the scoring with the most spectacular goal of the weekend, Lee Andrews then netted his first ever goal for the club and the scoring was concluded via Dan Robinson’ precise lob.

The delighted scorers are pictured above.

2007

We also played Scottish opposition at Borough Park thirteen years ago when Cowdenbeath came to town, their first visit since 1939.

‘Beath won 2-0 thanks to a goal in each half then completed their mini tour of the north of England with a win at Dunston next day.
