The story behind the picture – First player of the Year

One of the first ideas implemented by the Workington Reds Supporters’ Association following their formation in the mid-seventies, was recognising the player of the year.

Supporters were invited to vote for their choice as the most worthy recipient and the inaugural winner at the end of the 1975-76 season was defender Malcolm Dawes.

Malcolm (right) is pictured with his memento along with the manager, the late Alan Ashman, the late Tony Geidmintis and Martin Harris.

A former Aldershot and Hartlepool United player, Malcolm also had a spell in American football spending time with New York Cosmos and Denver.
