The story behind the picture – FA Cup 4th Round day at Lonsdale Park

This wonderful photograph was taken eighty six years ago on 27 January, 1934 when Workington made their one and only appearance in the 4th Round of the FA Cup.

Preston North End, who included a 21 year old Bill Shankly in their line-up, were Reds opponents for a match that attracted a record attendance to Lonsdale Park.

The official gate was announced as 16,730 with dozens of fans balanced precariously on the roof of one of the shelters, partially obscuring the Whitehaven Laundry advertisement.  Gate receipts of £1,263 were generated which was quite a windfall in those days.

Reds had taken a first half lead when John Stanger’s corner found its way into the net.  But North End were level before the interval and broke Workington hearts when Arthur Fitton scored a 78th minute winner.

Workington captain, Norman Watson, is pictured leading the team out, accompanied by a young mascot.
