“There’s a lot of depth in the squad”

Player-coach Gari Rowntree has described his new role as ‘perfect’ alongside Danny Grainger and Steve Rudd.

Rowntree, who has featured in pre-season both on the pitch and touchline, spoke about that change, Reds’ squad ahead of 2019-20, and being back at Borough Park for our open evening last night.

Gari said regarding the return to Reds’ home:

It’s brilliant.

It’s looking clean, fresh and ready to go.

As soon as we knew we were coming back here, the work that everyone has done behind the scenes to get us back has been unbelievable.

The stadium is far from the only the only thing looking good at the club, with a strong squad having come together over pre-season, and and the player-coach ‘100%’ believes the group is capable of promotion.

There’s a lot of depth in the squad. There’s experience there and a lot of young lads who’re looking really exciting.

The way Danny, myself and Ruddy have got them playing, it’s all positive. Hopefully, we have a good start and go from there.

Rowntree is relishing his new role in the group, and elaborated on it being ‘perfect.’

I’m enjoying it. It’s perfect really, I’m gonna keep fit and play when needed so it’s ideal, but even from the other side, learning in sessions with Danny and Ruddy.

I’m definitely excited about the season.

He’s also given himself a new nickname lately, after the defender became ‘Gari Goals’ when he netted the first of four at Radcliffe almost a fortnight ago.

Although goals aren’t integral to his game, he joked about a possible goal target for the new campaign.

It depends how many games I play! If I get more than two, I’ll be happy – although, after tonight’s shooting drill, I think that name’s gone.

Reds host Pickering Town tomorrow in their first Northern Premier League match, a 3pm kick-off at Borough Park.
