Foster's double leaves Reds staggering
By Paul Armstrong
After some great away performances of late, Reds came back to earth with a bump when they played their first Lancashire League home match for four months.
Admittedly, they were up against a good Padiham outfit but, to a man, they were well below par and the visitors completed an emphatic league double with ease.
Perhaps the mood was set after a sluggish start which took a turn for the worse, after sixteen minutes, when Reds gifted the potential champions a first half lead. They couldn’t deal with a teasing cross from the right and Robbie Watson had the misfortune to deflect the ball into his own net.
They rarely looked capable of forcing an equaliser and it was half an hour into the game before they had their first shot on target – a well struck effort from Sheldon Mossop superbly gathered by Padiham ‘keeper, George Bristol.
The match was effectively over within two minutes of the restart when the visitors doubled their advantage. Reds switched off defensively enabling Jack Foster to thump the ball home with a sweet left foot drive.
Top scorer Nathan Dryden sent a free kick from twenty yards over the bar but made amends by creating what proved to be a consolation goal in the seventy fifth minute. He collected the ball on the right and the perfect assist found Carl Denver (inset) at the far post who swept home his first goal for the club in some style.
But the attempted comeback was short lived with Padiham restoring their two goal lead a minute later. Luke Taylor supplied a brilliant cross from the left and Reds’ Mitchell Tarbit saved Foster’s original effort only for the ball to rebound off the latter and into the net.
Difficult to nominate a man-of-the-match contender for the hosts, but the five substitutes probably made more of impact than those who started.
