'Keeper Ousby stands out in Reserves victory
By Paul Armstrong
Without a Lancashire League fixture for almost six weeks, Reds returned to action at Borough Park and secured three hard-fought points against a talented Ashton Athletic outfit.
Jamie Pattinson scored the only goal after ten minutes when he cashed in on an error by Athletic ‘keeper, Lewis Goulding. The latter had the ball at his feet on the edge of the area but was dispossessed by the alert Pattinson, who then had the simple task of rolling the ball into an empty net.
Either side of what proved to be the winning goal, Sheldon Mossop and Cameron Harker both saw well-struck shots held by Goulding.
But the visitors dominated the game for long periods, squandered two or three good chances and found a resilient Reds’ defence a tough nut to crack.
And Maryport based goalkeeper, David Ousby (pictured), had a debut to remember with a string of fine saves and confident handling throughout.
The one occasion the ball did get past him, the outstanding Joe Hetherington was there to clear Samuel Oyemyi’s effort off the line.
Ousby, 17, made a smart save to deny Harry Johnson and from thereon he dealt with everything Ashton threw at him.
Reds visibly tired in the second half but there was a dogged determination about them and they worked hard for only their second clean sheet of the season.
Former first team skipper, Stuart Williamson, was in the technical area deputising for team manager, Billy Redden.
