Reds battle to third straight victory

A goal in each half from Reds veterans, Jason Walker and Garry Thompson, and a good solid defensively display helped achieve a best ever win at Grange Lane.

They had never scored more than one goal on this ground but a well taken effort, either side of the interval, paved the way to an important victory against a Ferriby side without a home win since August.

Although lacking in quality, Ferriby proved stubborn opposition and their overzealous approach and a poor playing surface suggested Reds would need more character than finesse and, thankfully, there was no shortage of that.

They fought fire with fire, were patient until getting their noses in front and then managed the game superbly.

Goal opportunities were limited but the Cumbrians looked the more likely to break the deadlock in a first half they dominated.

Thompson’s early shot thumped against the upright but he was flagged offside and then a clever back-heal from Conor Tinnion set-up Niall Cowperthwaite whose shot was saved by Lewis Exall.

When Thompson was brought to ground in the area, the referee ignored Workington’s legitimate appeals for a penalty. The loose ball fell conveniently for Walker but he failed to strike the ball properly and Exall saved comfortably.

And the ‘keeper again kept The Villagers in contention, diving full length to push away a firmly struck Brad Carroll shot.

Ferriby registered their first shot on target five minutes before the interval when Josh Vickers ventured forward but his effort was plucked out of the air by Aaran Taylor.

The opening goal came after Reds’ next attack in the forty second minute. Tinnion sent over a corner, Matty Douglas’ attempt was blocked before Thompson’s shot on the turn saw him open his goals account for the club and become one of the oldest Workington scorers during the non-league era.

A second goal would surely secure the points and it duly arrived eight minutes after the restart.

Again it was a set piece routine which did the damage with Cowperthwaite floating a free kick towards the far post. Walker was quickest to react and converted in style from close range, doubling the advantage with his tenth goal of the season.

Ferriby pushed forward in search of an equaliser but lacked the guile to find a way past Smith and Co in a solid back line.

There was one moment of concern, though, after Dan Wordsworth conceded a free-kick on the edge of the area. Callum Harrison sent his shot from eighteen yards towards goal only to see the ball hit the crossbar and bounce over for a goal kick.

The same player had another effort minutes later when a hint of desperation crept into Reds’ defensive duties. But with everyone expecting a similar attempt to his first, he fluffed his lines and the danger was averted.

Tougher assignments lay on the horizon but Reds will feel more confident going into those games after registering three consecutive wins for the first time in over a year.
