Reds end the season with a club record 27th victory
Reds completed the regular season in style disposing of a makeshift FC United side with comparative ease.
They controlled the game from start to finish with the narrow victory margin flattering the champions.
It was Reds’ twenty seventh league win of a memorable season, equalling the club record, and one more than FC United obtained as they won the title by a two point margin.
The influx of support from Manchester created a superb atmosphere and it was good to see the old ground hosting a record attendance for a Northern Premier League fixture.
Needing one point to guarantee the runners-up spot, Reds looked bright and lively from the off and were unfortunate not to be in front after an early onslaught. Supporters’ Player of the Year, Gavin Skelton, saw a sweetly struck volley blocked and, soon after, Alex Salmon’s free kick rattled David Carnell’s cross bar before Matty Tymon skied the rebound over the bar.
FC’s only riposte was a Matthew Walwyn effort which Jonny Jamieson dealt with comfortably.
Reds netted what proved to be the decider on the half hour mark. Conor Tinnion’s measured assist put top scorer Tymon in the clear and he confidently despatched his 15th of the season.
Tinnion had an opportunity to double the advantage but his audacious chip was easily dealt with then, after the interval, he saw a well hit volley narrowly miss the target.
Players’ Player of the Year Tinnion, was enjoying a productive afternoon and another assist saw Phil McLuckie just fail to connect with the ball.
United’s best moment of the second half again fell to Walwyn, this time his header was gathered by Jamieson after Craig Lindfield supplied the cross.
Tinnion’s next piece of wizardry saw Dan Wordsworth head home the teasing centre but the returning skipper had the goal disallowed for a pushing offence.
Evo-Stik ‘Goalkeeper of the Year’, Carnell, had a lucky escape late in the game. He was left helpless when Jake Simpson’s free kick hit the post with the ball then hitting him on the head before deflecting to safety.
Both sets of supporters were in celebratory mode at the end: the United masses singing their repertoire of victory songs with the locals applauding the outstanding efforts of Skelton and his squad.
Now, for the serious business.
